The Bearded Dragon Diet

The Bearded Dragon Diet will consist of many types of food.  Bearded Dragons are considered to be omnivores which means that their diet consists of many types of food.  If the Bearded Dragon lives in an area that consists of a lot of vegetation like plants  and brush, then they will eat leaves, shoots, seeds, and berries.Bearded dragon diet

However if the Bearded Dragons environment is in a dry desert like environment that consists of primarily bugs and insects, then that’s what the Bearded Dragon diet will be.  Many times adult or full grown Bearded Dragons will eat mice, small birds or other lizards and snakes.

They are very opportunistic as far as their food and diet traits.  This means that they will eat anything that presents itself.  In this way, the Bearded Dragons would be considered easy keepers since their diet does not have to be so specific.

Because the Bearded Dragon diet is so broad, they have a better opportunity to consume the right nutrients and vitamins to keep them healthy for a long life and for breeding.

Bearded Dragon Diet in Captivity

As Bearded Dragon lovers, we want to make sure that the Bearded Dragon diet is as close to their native habits as possible.  So we have to think of what their food would consist of.

First of all the bugs that they would be eating in the wild would be mostly full of food and therefore very healthy.  So we need to replicate this in captivity.  It is called “gut loading” the feeder food.  Giving your feeder crickets a lot of healthy food before feeding them to your Bearded Dragon, will give your Bearded Dragon the nutrients it needs to have healthy bones.

The Bearded Dragon diet can also include wax worms, fruit flies and superworms. Many Bearded Dragons like salads, and they can be supplemented with calcium and vitamin powders specially formulated for reptiles.

It is very important that Bearded Dragon Diet be a careful consideration in the care of your Bearded Dragon. The diet is what keeps your Bearded Dragon’s teeth, bones, and proper development and formation of eggs in females.

Bearded Dragon Diet – Right Temperature for Proper Digestion

In addition to the Bearded Dragon Diet, the proper level of heat in its environment is essential for the digestion of the Bearded Dragons food.  If the Bearded Dragon is not warm enough to digest it’s food, it will most likely regurgitate (throw up) the undigested food.  This can cause a lot of concern to Bearded Dragon Owners, and be very worrisome.

Always use a radiant heat source rather than heated electric rocks for keeping your Bearded Dragons temperature at a regular level.  Radiant heat would be ceramic heat emitters or heat lamp bulbs.  Always makes sure it’s the right wattage for the right size cage or aquarium.  To Learn more  about the Bearded Dragon Diet and their care, Sign up Below
